Amboseli National Park, Kenya
July, 2008
Our first stop in Kenya was the Amboseli Porini Camp near the Amboseli National Park. We arrived after a bumpy 2 hour drive from Nairobi. After a couple of hours rest we visited the Masai village and then went our for a "Sundowner" (drinks and hors d'ourves) out in the concervency. The tents were perfect, just the right amount of roughness but with beds, a flushing toilet and "shower" (a bag raised above your tent filled with warm water-20 litres/5 minutes max per person - piped to a shower head in the tent). The camp had a baby Grant's Gazelle named "Kofi Annan" as a permanent resident which was saved after a lion killed its mother.
The following day we went for a full day drive in the park itself with our guide Felix and our spotter Wilson. We saw lots of animals with the highlights of the day being the baby elephant which was so young it had trouble stepping up and down to cross the road and the zebras grazing right by a zebra carcass. The school bus was full of local kids out for a drive in the park. We stopped for lunch by the swamp but that was cut short when a bull elephant took an interest in us and started heading our way (look closely at the picture of Sam and Lisa standing out in the park). The trip ended at the top of a hill in the middle of the park with spectacular views of the swamp and lake.
The next day we boarded our "Safari Link" flight to Samburu.
