Schwangau, Germany
May, 2007
Schwangau was the vacation home for King Ludwig II of Germany. He built his fairy tale castle, Neuschwanstein, here so we decided to spend a day exploring. It is about 2 1/2 hours by car from our house.
We booked a vacation apartment in the town of Schwangau itself, right above the Sauerwein Bakery. We had a view of the castle from the living room window. The accommodations were nice but the smells of baking bread at 4 in the morning kept waking us up.
The castle was impressive even though it was incomplete (he died before he could finish we are told). Being set in the Bavarian alps with several lakes nearby made it all the more impressive.
Nearby, the town of Füssen had a very nice old town, restaurants and shopping.
